DePaul University , 2320 N Kenmore Ave, chicago , IL, 60614, United States.

The Depression and Anxiety Specialty Clinic of Chicago is offering two days of mindfulness and self-compassion training, led by Kristy Arbon, on Friday, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th from 9a-4p. This workshop will teach clinicians how to explore, understand, and work with shame and other difficult emotions. We’ll be exploring material from the Somatic Self-Compassion program and the Mindful Self-Compassion program. This workshop is specifically oriented toward professional caregivers who work with clients struggling with shame, self-worth and other difficult emotions.

Self-compassion is the emotional attitude of bringing kindness to ourselves when things go wrong in our lives. Most of us easily treat our friends and loved ones with warmth, tenderness and patience when they struggle, fall short or fail, but we have a much harder time bringing those same qualities of compassion to ourselves in the same situations.

Self-compassion can be learned by anyone, even those of us who didn’t receive enough affection in childhood or who find it embarrassing to be kind to ourselves. It’s a courageous mental attitude that stands up to harm, including the discomfort that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-isolation, and rumination when things go wrong. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, forgive ourselves, and respond to ourselves and others with care and respect.

12 CEs are avaiable for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs, Licensed Clinical and Counseling Psychologists.

Attendees must attend both days to qualify for continuing education credits.

The Depression and Anxiety Specialty Clinic of Chicago was founded in 2005 after it became apparent that there was a significant shortage of quality Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) available in Chicago. Many people with treatable disorders, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Anxiety and Major Depressive Disorder were suffering needlessly because they could not access quality care. It has been the mission of DASC to address this shortage by providing services to those suffering and also offering training opportunities to other professionals to increase the availability of CBT and DBT. DASC has a highly-trained clinical staff specializing in using and teaching CBT and DBT. Opportunities for ongoing consultation and training in CBT and DBT are available. www.dascchicago.com
